THEME: Improving the lives of people – Advancing the Action Plan for Statistics in CARICOM.
Sunday, 15 October 2017, will mark the ninth observance of Caribbean Statistics Day in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Given that this year’s the 15 October falls on a Sunday, Caribbean Statistics Day will be observed on Friday, 13th October 2017.
This year’s observance marks another significant achievement for Regional Statistics as CARICOM Heads of Government at their Thirty-Eighth Regular Meeting (July, 2017) endorsed the preparation of a Regional Strategy for the Development of Statistics (RSDS) in CARICOM. This in addition to the endorsement of the Action Plan for Statistics in 2016 reaffirms the recognition by Heads of Governments of the vital role of statistics in the further development of the Region. It is in this spirit that the National Statistical Offices of Member States agreed that the 2016 theme - “Improving the Lives of People – Advancing the Action Plan for Statistics in CARICOM” should remain as the theme for this years’ observance of Caribbean Statistics Day.
The RSDS is a key component of the Action Plan for Statistics and is fundamentally, a master-plan for regional statistical development geared to respond to specific regional policy objectives to enable the production of statistics at the national and regional levels. The RSDS will also cater to the additional demands that will be made of statistical offices to fulfill obligations related to the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), the Community Strategic Plan 2015-2019, the United Nations 2030 Development Agenda and the Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) Accelerated Modalities for Action (SAMOA) Pathway.
Member States and Associate Members were encouraged to actively engage with stakeholders including, suppliers and users of data and specifically, schools, children and youth in general in promoting the importance of statistics to the development of the respective countries.
